When it comes to the parameter of weight , size or portability a conventional generator surely loses the race to be the best of both these. It is mainly because they have a very huge and bulky size, quite heavy weight and little bit difficult to move from one place to the other. On the other hand when it comes to inverter generator, they lead the race to be the best among the two in terms of weight, size and portability because of their light weight construction, small and compact dimensions in terms of size, and highly portable nature. Surely the best option to go for between the two.
In terms of fuel tank capacity, the conventional ones have a higher fuel tank capacity because they are designed keeping less in mind the size parameter. Hence the main advantage from the design point of view is that they can provide with much longer operating/running time. But when we come to inverter generators , the scenario is more or less the same. Hence there is a tie in between these two when it comes to the aspect of running time because inverter generators also make efficient use of their fuel tank limits and provide a standard operating frequency of 10 hours and more. This is more than enough to complete all the essential operation/tasks.
Conventional generators are more noisy and usually results in much more noise pollution due to their design construction and inside machinery. Be it the new versions or the older ones, conventional generators were and will always be the noisy ones. Inverter generators on the other hand have a specific design and construction which is mainly done to keep the noise limits at as much low levels as possible. They have the capacity to provide reverse throttle under lighter loads and can drastically reduce the noise levels thus providing with a great user experience.
The engines of the conventional generators are less fuel efficient because they don’t have the capacity or the ability to make changes in the throttle to balance the load requirements. Hence they results in consuming much more fuel and cost you big money in terms of operating cost. On the other hand when it comes to inverter generators, they are much more fuel efficient and saves you a lot of money in terms of operating cost because the engines are designed to adjust the throttle requirements as per the load requirements. It works similar to any auto-pilot mechanism because with less of human intervention, they can adjust the setting to maximize output and efficiency.
When it comes to the aspect of who provides a better power output which is measured in terms of wattage basically, conventional generators surely lead this front. The wattage range for conventional generators vary anything between 500 watts to 50000 watts which is really great to cater to huge load requirements. But inverter generators don’t really provide you with huge amount of wattage because they are meant to cater to just your essential load requirements. They come in the wattage range of anything between 1000 watts to 4000 watts which is just fine for basics. So in this aspect they surely are leading behind.
When it comes to who provide a clean source of energy, it is definitely not the conventional generator. This is because they directly route the AC to the load without any intermediate processing. Hence no filtering of energy and hence a less clean energy source. Inverter generator on the other hand has quite a different mechanism. They first The obtained AC output to a DC output and then that DC output is converted back to an AC output. The main advantage of this is that you get a much cleaner source of energy and a much higher quality of power output due to intermediate filtering of energy. So inverter generator is the clear winner.
Now what if you have a huge load requirement to cater to? If you look at the conventional generators they lack the ability of parallel operation. This basically means that you cannot connect two conventional generators in parallel to fulfill your load requirement. All you have to do is connect multiple generators as per your requirement separately and cater to your load needs. On the other hand Inverter generators have this huge benefit which allow you to conduct parallel operation, It means connect two different generators in parallel and increase your wattage limit to balance your load requirements by doubling the power capacity. So inverter generator is the clear winner when it comes to parallel operation.
Another aspect is the design of the generator. Now this is a matter of discussion because many have argued that whatever be the design of the generator, it won’t affect the performance because performance of a generator is driven by its machinery not its shape and size. So design doesn’t matter when it comes to constructing an efficient conventional generator Same thing goes for the inverter generator as well because design doesn’t affect performance.
When it comes to the cost parameter, conventional generator have a lower value as compared to inverter generators because of simpler machinery and less sophisticated electronics. They are less expensive to buy in general. On the other hand they have quite a bit of advanced machinery and electronics which makes them expensive in terms of cost. So a higher cost parameter keeps them behind in the affordability aspect.
